Best Practices for Creating eLearning Modules


Getting Started:

  • Download approved SMPH branded PowerPoint templates
  • Define clear S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time Sensitive) learning objectives
  • Chunk material into smaller modules if it will take students longer then 20 minutes
    • Preferable time per recorded chunk is 10-12 minutes

Visual Appeal | PowerPoint Tips:

  • Bullet points instead of paragraph
    • Bulleted text should end in a (.) if it’s a full sentence
    • Try to keep punctuation consistent in same group of points
  • Left align text
  • Use bold and italics to emphasis key words, do not underline unless it’s a hyperlink
  • Leave white space on page to aid readability
  • Apply interactive strategies that engage learners
    • Add knowledge checks
    • Add graphics and animations
  • Use an active voice, present tense and second person as appropriate

Graphics | Principles for use of graphics in digital media:

  • Ensure that graphics are accurately described with appropriate alternative text
  • Ensure graphic is displayed with appropriate resolution
  • Ensure that images enhance the content
